The folks at The Verge have gotten their hands on a couple “artists renderings” from Foxconn of what look to be the upcoming (and long awaited) reversible USB cable:
While the pictures do say they are ‘subject to change’ we are at least getting a glimpse of what is most likely a final design. And as you can tell, it looks like it was designed specifically to avoid any patent troll attempt by Apple. You can bet that the same company that amazingly owns the patent on tablets with rounded corners, may own the most ridiculous and obscure patents on reversible cable designs. So the USB Type-C cable has sharper corners than Lightning, and the contacts are on the inner surface instead of the outside. This design should also keep costs down, as it won’t require any sort of intelligence built into it like Lightning does.
USB 3.1 will bump speeds up to 10 Gbps when it is released, but I have a feeling this is the feature people will look forward to the most.
