There’s only nine days left until Blizzard announces what their next game will be, and the guessing game is heating up. That’s to be expected since Blizzard has yet to make an actual bad game. I’ll give them a pass for Starcraft: Ghost and that other Warcraft game since they never came out, but in over 16 years, the resume is as impressive as any other developer with franchises like Warcraft, Starcraft and Diablo.
And let’s not forget the classic The Lost Vikings!
Blizzard is expected to announce their plans for a new game on the 19th of May during an event in South Korea, which still has millions of people competing in Starcraft tournaments. I’ve always found that a bit strange since the game is almost ten years old and few games hold my attention for more than a month.
Amongst the rumored titles are Starcraft 2, a Starcraft-based MMO, and a new Diablo game which may or may not be a MMO. With the success of World of Warcraft, I wouldn’t bet against Blizzard releasing another MMO based on the Starcraft universe but since that would make it a competitor for WoW, a second Starcraft RTS is more likely.
Although a new game is most definitely going to be announced, I’d also expect Blizzard to talk about plans for a second World of Warcraft expansion pack or at least some ideas for the larger future content patches sometime in the near future. The Burning Crusade has been a relatively big success so they will probably elaborate on future plans for WoW but perhaps not until Blizzcon on August 3rd.
