The latest Valve survey results are in, where users of Steam anonymously submit their system specs.
Some of the results (from VE3D – my comments are in italic):
- Most common Shader 2.0 video card? ATI Radeon 9600
- Most common Shader 3.0 video card? NVIDIA GeForce 6600
- Most common multi-desktop resolution? 2560 x 1024 (even dual-monitor users have bare minimum specs!)
- Most popular primary desktop resolution? 1280 x 800 (1280×1024 isn’t listed, so it probably gets counted as this resolution)
- Most common amount of video ram? 256 megs (plenty for most games on Steam)
- Most common LCD size? 19″
- Most common CRT size? 16″ (viewable – on a CRT this means 17″)
- Most popular sound card? Realtek AC97 (FEAR THE CRAB~!)
- Dual core user percentage? 22%
- Quad core user percentage? 0.25%
- Most common AMD CPU speed? 2.0 Ghz to 2.29 Ghz
- Most common Intel CPU speed? 2.7 Ghz to 2.99 Ghz (this is probably thrown off a bit by older Prescott CPUs with high clock speeds)
- CPU market share? 52% Intel, 47% AMD (just a year ago, this split was 50/50)
- Most common amount of system ram? 512 Mb to 999 Mb (the most surprising – come on guys ram is SO CHEAP these days! Upgrade today!)
- Most common Internet speed? 2,048.0 Kbps
- Most common hard drive size? – 250 gigs
- DVD drive? 95.69% Yes
- OS? XP rules with 92%
- Mic? 72% Say yes
I think the Counterstrike players (which is still massively popular) are throwing off the curve. I’d like to see a survey done on a game like Supreme Commander or something!
