I passed out before Sony held their press conference (since it was 3am for me) but looking at the conference now, it looks like I missed one of the better ones of the Big Three.
First, they showed off the new PSP. The verdict? It looks pretty much exactly the same as the old one. Same screen, same style of design, etc. However, it is 33% lighter, 19% slimmer, and the battery has been improved. The new version will come in various colours, and retail for $199 (so I guess you’ll still be able to get the old version for $169 – less on eBay). So they didn’t fix the annoying analog button, and they didn’t make a nicer crosspad. Talk about missed opportunity…
The next big announcement is that Unreal 3 will be exclusive to the Playstation 3 – for a while at least. This is going to be another timed exclusive (the same announcement was made for the game HAZE), where they will have console exclusivity for a while, but then the XBOX 360 will be hosting the game as well. Also, community mods are no longer the domain of PC gaming only – mods for Unreal 3 will be shared between the PC and PS3 versions! One more advantage on the PC Gaming Checklist crossed out – ouch!
Also, Metal Gear Solid 4 will indeed be PS3 exclusive – forever this time. It was also announced that this will be the final game in the main series, and the story will have a conclusive ending. Furthermore, Hideo Kojima – who has been working on the series for 20 years now – will be stepping away from Metal Gear Solid. This is it, folks. Until we get some whacky spinoff or prequel.
