We were possibly one of the first sites to mention that a lot of developers are making their multiplatform games on the XBOX 360, and then porting them over to PS3. We even had an anonymous game developer compare the two consoles, and he said that exact thing:
The XBOX 360 is also far faster to develop for due to better development tools (massively popular Visual Studio .NET vs. proprietary, buggy PS3 compiler and debugger), better documentation, and easier architecture (3 general purpose CPU’s vs. 8 specialized processors that require DMA). Timing has also caused all next-gen middleware developers to make XBOX 360 their primary platform, and they will ‘add ps3 support’ as needed.
The first batch of PS3 games that were also available on XBOX 360 easily proved this, as videos and screenshots directly comparing these games became immediately available.
So it comes as little surprise that 1Up.com is reporting that this year’s Madden games (both Madden NFL and NCAA), and even 2KSports’ unlicensed All Pro Football (which makes this story even bigger, since the game is completely unrelated) will play at a choppy 30 fps framerate on the PS3, while the XBOX 360 plays them at a locked 60 FPS framerate.
I cannot express the importance of this enough, at least to gamers like myself. Not that I am a huge football fan (I am not) but to be brutally honest, the main reason I have only just gotten back into console gaming (since abandoning it around the middle of PS2’s lifespan, and I skipped the XBOX completely) is because FINALLY the consoles are starting to perform well enough to play games smoothly. The whole PC vs. Console debate has gone on forever, but that was the single most important thing to me; console games were often choppy, and unplayable to a point (I could never play a GTA game longer than a day or so; the low framerate made it unplayable to me) but PC games can be tweaked, or you can upgrade your hardware to have the game run as smoothly as you want.
Football games are huge in the US, and considered to be console-sellers. If word really spreads that the PS3 versions suck compared to the XBOX 360 version, guess which console little Jimmy is going to ask for from Santa this Christmas, if he doesn’t already have one?
