It’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride for those of us anticipating the new Blizzard game but minutes ago, Mike Morhaime took the stage in South Korea and announced that the new Blizzard game will indeed be Starcraft 2.
It really couldn’t come at a better time and place for Blizzard as Korea has probably the largest active player base for the nine year old game. There are numerous competitions and leagues based on the RTS and players have gotten so good that they are calculated on moves per second. People watch matches on TV…those guys are like rock stars.

This comes as a bit of a disappointment to a non-RTS fan like myself. In my opinion, most RTS games are a rehash of the same game with different skins and models and gameplay remaining much the same. However, given that Blizzard hasn’t really ever made a poor game, I wouldn’t be at all surprised to see them revolutionize the genre that they helped create and popularize.
What does this mean for the world of gaming? Well, even if it isn’t released, everyone will almost automatically assume Starcraft 2 will be the game to beat in the genre and step up their game. For a nine year old game, the fan base is massive. This might also inadvertently cause a boom in hardware sales as all the folks who never upgraded their computers since they can already play Starcraft will suddenly have to go out and purchase a new box.
Of course, this also means that we’ll have to wait at least another three or four years before it’s possible for a Diablo sequel to be in the works, if that ever happens at all. I can only hope.
