Over on a NeoGAF thread discussing video game sales figures, someone has put together this nifty chart, showing Mario’s timeline not in terms of years, but in sales figures of all the Super Mario console games (in Japan only, at the time being).

This is an interesting perspective, considering that the top 2 Super Mario games are the oldest and newest releases. That’s right, New Super Mario Bros. is the #2 top-selling Super Mario game of all time in Japan, bypassing games 20 years older than it! It’s got a long way to go before it catches up to the original Famicom game Super Mario Bros. but I’m sure it’ll get there in time. Especially considering that 10 million people in Japan own a DS Lite now.
