PCMark 2002

Just before AMD announced this 2100+ processor, MadOnion (makers of 3DMark) released a brand spanking new unified benchmark app.  Benchmark freaks rejoice! PCMark 2002 is quick, a run takes just under 10 minutes, simple, and to the point.  You get final scores for CPU and Memory tests, as well as a HDD test, which we won't show here because, well, our hard drive is pretty much outdated by now, and won't really benefit from a faster CPU.

Unfortunately, PCMark's entry isn't exactly of the grand variety... The one to look at is the CPU score at the bottom.  Hardly an increase at all, unfortunately.

SYSmark 2002

You saw the big stink made about SYSmark in our original AthlonXP vs. Pentium 4 test in February... Basically, one of the tests were flawed, which pretty much invalidated the entire score for most people.  I wasn't about to apply a manufacturer-created patch to change the scores around.  Rather than that, we will just use the brand new version of SYSmark which handily takes care of the whole mess, and at the same time updates all the software used in the benchmark!

First we'll do the Office Productivity scores.  SYSmark 2002 tests Office Productivity performance in the following REAL applications:

  • Microsoft Word 2002
  • Microsoft Excel 2002
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2002
  • Microsoft Outlook 2002
  • Microsoft Access 2002
  • Netscape Communicator┬« 6.0
  • Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred v.5
  • WinZip 8.0
  • McAfee VirusScan 5.13

Dead even.  This is really an odd score... I'll get back to this in the future, once we test it with some more CPU's...

SYSmark 2002 tests Internet Content Creation performance in the following REAL applications:

  • Adobe Photoshop┬« 6.01
  • Adobe Premiere┬« 6.0
  • Microsoft Windows Media Encoder 7.1
  • Macromedia Dreamweaver 4
  • Macromedia Flash 5.

Don't worry, the SSE bug no longer exists.  Here we see a nice fat jump with the new processor, this is really the first time we can see a REAL difference in performance...

After all these benchmarks, seeing SYSmark 2002 Internet Content Creation as the only one that has any sort of margin isn't much to get excited about... Well, unless you live for creating internet content, I suppose...
