Quake 3

No benchmarking suite is complete without Quake 3 make an appearance.  We chose to use QUAVER.dem, with compressed textures OFF.  Believe me when I say watching Quake 3 in high resolution on a GeForce 3 paired up with the AthlonXP 2100+ is a thing of beauty.

Serious Sam

Serious Sam 1 makes one of its last appearances this time around.  Starting with our next sound card review, we are going to use Serious Sam: Second Encounter.  From what I've seen though, there is almost nothing new to SS:SE, but there are a TON of features to tweak and play around with.

As far as SS goes, we again are seeing a very moderate increase in performance with the 2100+.

With DroneZ, which by the way has excellent menu background music, the video card is clearly the bottle neck.  A faster CPU will get you nowhere here, but who's going to complain about that framerate?

So out of our little game benching suite, we see that the extra "1000 points" or whatever AMD calls it, doesn't really offer much in the way of gaming performance.

I just noticed that they are all OpenGL games... This was no intentional! We're still looking for some decent D3D tests; I can't wait until the Unreal 2002 test is made public.  UT is just WAY too flaky, and half the time screws up in one way or another.

Let's go with some number crunching benchmarks...
