SYSmark 2001 Office Productivity

First let's look directly at the SYSmark Office Productivity results, since they will not at all be affected by missing SSE2 instructions... SYSmark tests Office Productivity performance in the following applications:

-MS Word 2000
-MS Excel 2000
-MS PowerPoint 2000
-MS Access 2000
-MS Outlook 2000
-Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred v.5
-Netscape Communicator 6.0
-WinZip 8.0
-McAfee VirusScan 5.13

So regardless of the WMEncoder debacle, the Pentium 4 still takes the lead in office productivity.  The AthlonXP still performs quite well especially when you consider the fact that it is a lot cheaper.

SYSmark 2001 Internet Content Creation

SYSmark tests Internet Content Creation in the following apps:

-Macromedia Dreamweaver 4
-Adobe Photoshop 6.0
-Adobe Premiere 6.0
-MS Windows Media Encoder 7
-Macromedia Flash 5

Most of these programs should support SSE, however it seems that WMEnc is the only one that doesn't detect it on the AthlonXP.

And this is why the SYSmark scores are so low.  After looking at all the numbers throughout the previous pages, you can probably say that if not for the WMEnc error, the Athlon would probably be within 5-10 points of the P4 either way.

Where is Winstone?

Normally we do ZD Winstone tests, but I find that to be rather redundant, since they use pretty much the same applications as SYSmark (in most cases older versions at that).  I also find Winstone to be quite flaky, often producing unrepeatable results.  Once Content Creation 2002 arrives, I think I'll give it another go, so watch for that in our next CPU review..
