Let me get this out of the way first, the clip design is brilliant... but it is, like sushi, an acquired taste. The clip is made so that you do not have to use a screwdriver like you would with so many other heatsinks. This eliminates the potential danger of scraping your flathead on your expensive mobo.

However, for people with cramped cases, it might be difficult to reach in and attach the Copper-X. Although it was a tight squeeze, I managed to get the Copper-X onto my 1800+ with minimal effort so I love the clip design.

As seen with the Tt Volcano 9, the clip has three slots to accommodate all three prongs on the socket, making for a more secure hold for a relatively heavy HSF.

Overall, I don't think I've ever installed a combo this quickly before. After snapping it in place, just plug it in and you're ready to go.

Now let's see how it performs.

Testing Method

As you know, we've been recording temperatures using thermistors mounted directly onto the CPU for the past months as it is more accurate than thermistors on the motherboard, which are actually mounted in the socket under the chip.

However, even this has a margin of error. New motherboards are finally allowing the use of the Athlon XP's built-in thermal diode. This method of temperature measure should, in theory, be even more accurate than our previous testing method so we will be using this procedure for this review.

The test machine consists of a AGOIA 1800+ (1.53 GHz) Athlon Xp mounted on a MSI KT3 Ultra-ARU with a single stick of 512MB Samsung PC2700 DDR333 RAM.

The case is a Thermaltake Xaser II A5000A, loaded up with 5 low speed fans. If you haven't checkout out this case yet (have you been living under a rock?) you simply must check out our review of it.  As this isn't a speed benchmark, I guess the rest of my system isn't a factor.

Testing Results

After torturing my CPU with an hour of Prime95, here are the results.

Idle = 30C
Load = 41C

Very nice numbers, especially for a Athlon XP. I would expect nothing less from a full copper heatsink with a high speed fan, especially one made with the quality of the Copper-X.

Since there are currently no other heatsinks to measure against, we'll leave out overclocking performance for now.  Watch for a full shootout of all our AMD coolers very soon, with full overclocking results.

With great performance and a great, solid design, the Copper-X seems like a shoe-in for a "I AM HARDCORE" award, doesn't it?

Well, it's not. It comes close but one thing holds it back. This thing is LOUD. 47 high-pitched decibels is not something you want to sleep to.

And that is just about all that is wrong with this cooler. The idle numbers best my Volcano 9 by 2C when my V9 is at full speed and by 6C when I am at my usual setting of 3200rpm. However, those few degrees, to me, aren't worth the jet engine sound in my room, especially when a plane or two already pass by my house every so often.

This is a great cooler and it definitely is one of those products hardcore overclockers or people who don't have their rigs next to their bed will be interested it. The rest of us will have to look elsewhere though.
