The Test

To test the temperatures, we ran 30 minute Unreal Tournament loops, and 30 minute Prime95 Torture Tests.  We also measured the idle temp.  We finally are able to compare the Golden Orb to the Alphas directly (I know many of you wanted to see this).

HSF Unit Idle Temp (C) 30 Minutes of UT 30 Minutes of Prime95
Thermaltake Golden Orb 31.0 31.4 31.9
Intel Stock 35.2 36.3 37.2
Alpha CO-PEP66T (Fin Model) 30.4 30.9 31.6
Alpha FC-PAL35R (Pin Model) 30.2 30.4 30.9

As you can see, while the Golden Orb doesn't quite match the performance of the Alpha's it gets pretty damn close.  At less than half price, I wouldn't even have to think twice about using the Golden Orb on my system (unless you really want to go ALL the way)!

If you want to get an awesome heatsink for your Celeron, P3, or Celeron II, you will not likely need to look any further than the Golden Orb.  This thing is just awesome for the price.  If price is absolutely no object to you AND you can give up a DIMM slot, then you can do slightly better in performance.  For my money though, it's Golden Orb all the way!

  • Very good temperature scores, rivals even the Alphas
  • AWESOME price
  • Fits well on a Coppermine without the use of shims or other mods
  • Also works on s370 Celerons
  • Looks damn cool
  • Didn't block off any DIMMs!

  • Some of the more expensive Heatsinks will perform better
  • Let me think of something else...
  • Hmmm... I guess...
  • Nothing!

Final Score: 95%
