USB File Copying

USB transfer speed may have also been affected by SP1, so we're going to take a look at that as well.

The same files were used as explained on the previous page. The methodology was a bit different this time though. In this case, the "F:" Raptor HDD was attached to a Vantec NexStar 3 SATA > USB HDD enclosure (you can read our review of that here). The files were then transferred from the "C:" to the USB drive, and back. A new folder was created for each transfer, to prevent any caching from taking place. Again, all transfers were completed 5 times, and we used an average of the 5 in the results below:

Incredibly, transfering the large folder full of files really chokes on SP1, where the retail version handled it just fine. Remember that each test was completed at least 5 times, and I saw this same score (within 5%) each and every time. I really have no explanation for this, because...

In every other case, transferring out to USB is about 4-6% faster with SP1 installed.

Let's see if this awkward trend continues when copying files FROM USB to the hard drive:

This time, SP1 chokes not only on the huge 6.25GB folder, but the smaller one as well. It seems that not everything is improved with SP1, and Microsoft probably has some answering to do.
