Now, before we go any further, it's important to keep in mind that this board was designed for the workstation market which demands stability over all. Thus, to protect users from themselves, the BIOS settings were on the basic side.

Users can basically change two things. They can change the speed of the HT...

.. and they can change the timings on their memory. That's it! No overclocking in the BIOS for anyone. Zip. Zilch. Nada.

Turning to the system monitor, we see some very basic settings. The only setting that could be changed here was the speed of the fans. The catch? You needed a 4 pin fan in order to do so. The Nvidia monitor software that came with this motherboard allows you to see this information from within Windows.

Benchmark Setup

In order to test this motherboard, we've assembled the following configuration:

Motherboard: Tyan K8WE Motherboard with BIOS Rev 1.01
CPUs: Dual Opteron 244
Memory: 4 * 512 Corsair ECC DDR400
Video: PCIe Leadtek 6600GT with Forceware 71.84 Drivers
Harddrive: Seagate 120gig SATA drive
Soundcard: M-audio Revo 7.1
Power Supply: Silverstone ST52F Power Supply
OS: Windows XP SP2, DirectX 9.0C

For comparison, we used the previous generation Iwill DK8N which is considered to be one of the better AGP Opteron solutions. Because the PCIe based 6600GT obviously doesn't work with an AGP slot, we used a Leadtek AGP 6600GTĀ video card.

In addition to Tyan, I'd like to thank Leadtek and Silverstone for their help in getting this review done. Leadtek's video cards are definitely something that you should consider in your next PC purchase and the Silverstone provided us with rock solid stability from the power supply which is definitely something you need for a dual CPU system.

Let's look at some benchmarks shall we?
