PCMark 05

Futuremark released a new version of PCMark just in time for this review. All of the tests have been updated, and an emphasis is now put on multithreaded performance. For full details, check out the Whitepaper.

The system test suite is a collection of tests that are run to generate an overall PCMark score. Three of the test scenarios are run multithreaded - two of those include two simultaneous tests and one is with four tests running simultaneously. The remaining eight tests are run single threaded. The System Test consists of the following tests:

  • HDD - XP startup
  • Physics and 3D
  • 2D - Transparent windows
  • 3D - Pixel Shader
  • Web page rendering
  • File Decryption
  • 2D - Graphics memory - 64 lines
  • HDD - General usage
  • Multithreaded test 1: Video encoding & Audio Compression
This test runs the Video encoding and Audio Compression tests at the same time multithreaded.
  • Multithreaded test 2: Text Edit & Image Decompression
This test runs the Text Edit and Image decompression tests at the same time multithreaded.
  • Multithreaded test 3: File Encryption & HDD - Virus scan & Memory - Latency 16MB & File compression

The CPU test suite is a collection of tests that are run to isolate the performance of the CPU. The CPU Test Suite also includes multithreading: two of the test scenarios are run multithreaded; the other including two simultaneous tests and the other running four tests simultaneously. The remaining six tests are run single threaded. The tests in the CPU suite include:

  • File compression
  • File decompression
  • File Encryption
  • File Decryption
  • Image decompression
  • Audio encoding
  • Multithreaded test 1: File compression & File Encryption
This test runs the File Compression and File Encrypting tests at the same time multithreaded.
  • Multithreaded test 2: File decompression & File decryption & Audio decompression & Image decompression
This test runs the File compression, File decryption, Audio decoding and Image decoding tests at the same time multithreaded.

With such a heavy emphasis on multithreading and multitasking performance, expect the P-D to do well in these tests:

As expected, the P-D 820 does extremely well in PCMark 05. PCMark always intends on looking at how computing will be in the future, as opposed to today or yesterday (hence the corporate name "Futuremark"). So I don't expect the P-D to do quite so well in all of our tests...

Cinebench 2003

Cinebench is a software-based multi-threaded rendering benchmark. It is based on a real world platform; Maxon's CINEMA 4D R8 software, so while it is a synthetic benchmark, it should give an idea of how it would perform in Maxon's rendering software:

Again, the multithreaded nature of this particular program puts the P-D on top.

ScienceMark 2.0

The final version of ScienceMark 2.0 for 32 bit has been released, and that's what we'll use until we move on to 64 bit testing (which will be once the platform and drivers are more mature, and it is more widely used). We'll only use the Primordia test, which is multithreaded:

Honestly, I am disappointed by the 820 in this case. It should at least as fast as teh 630, even though it has a slightly lower clock speed. Oh well, it's not like many people are interested in "calculating the Quantum Mechanical Hartree-Fock Orbitals for each electron in any element of the periodic table", which is what Primordia does.
