Introduction

Unlike NVIDIA, the recent launch of Intel's dual-core solutions neccessitated the introduction of new 945 and the 955 chipsets. We have another article in the works taking a closer look at these chipsets and the new dual-core CPUs from Intel so for now, the only thing you really need to know is that these chipsets have official support for DDR2-667 whereas the 915/925 chipset was limited to just DDR2-533.

For this review, Foxconn has kindly sent us three of their motherboards which will fit the needs of most anyone going with an Intel system. For those who want the absolute best, there is the 955X based 955X7AA. This board can be found at Newegg.com for $240.

For those who don't want to spend quite so much, there is the 945P based 945P7AA lacks the tight memory timings of the 955X board. Also missing is support for ECC memory. We found this board at a couple stores: Page Computer has it for $137, and SpaceCenter Systems sells it for $141.

Finally, we have a little (no pun intended) something for the HTPC crowd in the form of 945G based  945G7MA which comes in an mATX form factor. This one sells at PC Connection for around $164. Quite a bit for a mATX board.

Let's take a closer look at the boards.
