Fan Control

Included with the 120mm radiator exhaust fan is a fan speed control dial that mounts to an included PCI bracket. At low speeds the 120mm fan runs at a measly 800rpm and is absolutely silent (i.e. I have to put my ear next to it to hear it).

At high speed and 2800rpm the experience is completely the opposite with the noise ratcheting up to the mid 30dBA, as loud as some of the worst air cooling screamers (without the notable high pitch squeal).

Before we get to the test results, here's a quick shot of the unit all setup before and after installation into a mid-tower case.

As you can see there is plenty of room to spare, even in a mid tower case. The best thing is that since the entire unit fits inside the chassis, the amount of noise generated seems much less as compared to a unit where the radiator has to be mounted outside of the case.

Test Setup

We have matched the Aquagatte Mini R120 up against our reigning universal air cooling champion, the Gigabyte 3D Rocket Cooler along with the recently reviewed Coolermaster Vortex TX and a stock Intel Heatsink. We unfortunately do not have any other mainstream watercooling setups to test against the Aquagatte Mini at this time.

All coolers were installed using the respective manufacturer's thermal compound that came with each cooler sample. CPU temperature readings were taken using the processor's built in thermal diodes and read using Abit's uGuru control panel. Ambient temperatures throughout testing were a constant 22-degree Celsius.

Testing was completed on an Abit AI7 motherboard with the R120 fan running at both slow (800rpm) and fast (2800rpm) fan speeds. The Vortex and stock cooler ran at constant rpms, and the Gigabyte cooler ran at both low (2000/2500 rpm) and high (4500/4000 rpm) speeds.

When overclocked, the P4 3.2E was running at 3.6Ghz (15x240) and 1.465V. To achieve full CPU load both Prime95 andthe Find-A-Drug DC program were run at the same time, both set to high priority.
