Memory and System Performance

Even though this is a video oriented review, we cannot ignore the memory and system performance of these chipsets! Since Intel CPU's do not yet utilize an on-chip memory controller, performance can range quite a bit depending on the chipset used.

So we'll start with SiSoft Sandra, as usual:

As expected, the 915G chipset excels in memory bandwidth. The 865G on this particular board does not utilize the PAT feature, so stays behind the 9100 Pro IGP.

Next up is the PCMark 04 "System" test. PCMark04 is used to determine an estimated system performance overview. While it doesn't use actual applications like SYSmark and ZDBench, it uses *parts* of those programs to determine performance.

Performance of the following applications are considered:

File compression
File decompression
File encryption
File decryption
Virus scanning
Grammar check
Audio conversion
Image processing
Web page rendering
WMV video compression
DivX video compression
Physics calculation and 3D

So this should give us an overall basic idea on how the chipsets stack up against each other in terms of 'every day' performance. The 865G is probably held way back due to low performance in the graphics portion of the test.

Next up, we'll look at how the southbridges perform, at least USB 2.0 and SATA performance.
