It's going to be hard coming to a conclusion here. I've been offered to review Foxconn motherboards before, but I have declined because their market tends to be low cost buyers. However, I had to jump at the chance to review an SiS 755-based A64 motherboard, since they are few and very far between.

So I'll have to look at each individually, to be fair.

The Chipset

Besides wacky CPU usage with HDD or USB under heavy load, the 755 keeps up with NVIDIA's nForce 150, and VIA's K8T800 perfectly fine. Of course, both NVIDIA and VIA are on the verge of releasing newer, faster, better chipsets to the public within days, so keep that in mind if you're shopping around right now.

If you're looking into a budget based A64 system (they exist!), and can find an SiS 755 board for less than either of the other chipsets, then don't hesitate to go for it!

The Board

Unfortunately, being a low cost board, some sacrifices are to be made. Luckily, Foxconn didn't cheap out with onboard peripherals; everything you can imagine is here. FireWire, audio, GB Ethernet, 4 SATA adapters, and more! Too bad they made the one sacrifice I wished they wouldn't - no voltage controls in the BIOS! The ONE thing that may have made this board into a 'sleeper buy' has turned it into one that I simply cannot recommend to anyone other than pure budget-buyers.

That said, if you happen to BE a budget-buyer, or know someone who is, this is definitely a board worth looking at!

  • Great layout
  • Tons of onboard periphs
  • Nice memory tweaking functions
  • Solid stability
  • Low cost

  • None of the extras you'd find on a more costly board
  • No voltage controls
  • Soft bundle (a single IDE cable, no extra USB ports)
  • Poor USB performance
