Single Channel vs. Dual Channel on the I865PE

Before we get into the head to head benchmarks I wanted to take a little time out to test and see exactly what type of performance gain is offered by Dual Channel memory with the Intel platform. If you remember our Corsair XMS PC3500 review we found that the gain is quite marginal on the AMD platform. Will the P4's larger bandwidth allow it to more effectively utilize the full 128bit memory bus? Let's have a look and see.

For the purposes of testing an Abit IS7 was setup with P4 3.0 800mhz processor, OCZ EL PC4000, a Soltek SL-GF4TI4200 (41.09), a Maxtor 30GB ATA133, 7200rpm, 2MB HDD, and a clean install of Windows XP SP1. The latest Intel Chipset Drivers were used. The OCZ was run in sync with the P4 stock speed at 200mhz.

First up as always is Sandra 2004

An obvious bandwidth jump here as was expected with the move from 64bit to 128bit.  Let's see if things continue with Aida32.

And quite predictably the trend continues with the largest performance increase being gained during memory read operations.

Next we'll check out Futuremark's PCMark 04. This synthetic benchmark measures not only memory performance, but also the system as a whole, using real world applications as opposed to pure math calculations.

Very interesting. Although we see roughly the same memory performance gain, the overall system performance gain is minimal. Now let's check things out where it really counts, real world gaming! We'll be using two popular and current games in Enemy Territory and Unreal Tournament 2k3.

Well wouldn't you know it. Things on the P4 front seem to be much the same as it was over on the AMD side. Dual channel memory, although an exciting new technology, seem to be just a little bit ahead of its time as not even the bandwidth hungry P4 can translate all that extra bandwidth into real world frames per second. As the P4's clock speed ramps up, we should start seeing more of an increase in performance.
