For the first time, I have a video card with a digital monitor output.  Unfortunately, I have never, and probably WILL never own a digital monitor, but that's no big deal.

The Radeon 7500 also has a TV output.  This means that you should be able to output to 3 monitors at the exact same time (ATI even included a Digital-to-standard VGA output for the second monitor).  I don't think you *need* to use HydraVision for this, it is just another software suite included to make the bundle more attractive.

Speaking of software bundle, also included in the retail package are the ATI Multimedia Centre and the latest version of the ATI DVD Player.  ATI cards are known as being top quality PC DVD players, but being a movie lover, I would never watch one on my computer :)


I am in no way going to consider overclocking results when drawing my conclusion of this card, but we are who we are, so we HAVE to do SOMETHING with it, right? :)

We were able to increase the core and memory speed by 30 Mhz each.  On the memory side, this makes for an effective rate of 520 Mhz, which is even higher than the GeForce 3 Ti 500.  My first attempt was for a 300 Mhz DDR memory clock, but that resulted in some pretty severe texture artifacts as you can imagine.  Still, it is nice to see that there is some extra performance left in the 7500 we can squeeze out with some extra tweaking.

HyperZ: Just Hype?

If you're like me, you are wary of a company using funky names like "HyperZ" to set their products apart from others... However, what if there is some real benefit to it? To test this, we used PowerStrip to disable HyperZ, and ran 3dMark:

It's good to know that HyperZ really isn't just hype after all! For a single benchmark, it is really great to see an increase in performance like that.  Good job ATI!

One Note: As you know, we usually include the ugly-but-useful OpenGL benchmark, GLMark by Vulpine.. Unfortunately, we were not able to run this program with the Radeon 7500.  Could this be a sign of driver gremlins that have plagued ATI in the past? I would say no, since I have seen no other indications of poor or unstable drivers... I just wish it worked in time for the review.

I won't know for sure until I get a GeForce 3 Titanium 200, but it seems like the Radeon 7500, again, was released just a little too late.  If the GF3Ti200 indeed sells for the same price as the Radeon 7500, and does perform a lot better, I will find it hard to recommend this card.  For now though, this is only speculation; I can't draw any conclusions just yet.

If someone asked me, which card should I buy RIGHT NOW for around $160, I would have to say Radeon 7500.  As a middle-to-high end card, the Radeon 7500 supports many great features you normally wouldn't expect to see, and you'd be surprised by what kind of performance and features you'll get with it for the price!  It will definitely replace the GeForce 2 Pro as my main card (that is, until the 8500 arrives) ;-)

  • WinXP Drivers worked fine!
  • Faster than a GeForce 2 Pro in most cases
  • Very good picture quality, in 2D and 3D
  • Excellent performance of enhanced 3D abilities, such as Anti Aliasing and Bumpmapping

  • NVIDIA just released some potentially faster cards that go for the same price
  • Poor 16 bit performance (if that matters anymore)
  • When and why did Video Cards stop coming with games?
