All Abits overclock like mad, right?

WRONG.  To test overclocking capability, I took the P3 550e/Iwill slocket II from my main PC, which uses a Tyan s1854 Trinity 400.  On the Tyan, I run the CPU completely stable at 770 MHz, with a voltage of 1.65.  We should be able to get at LEAST that with an Abit board, right?

Well, at 770 MHz (FSB of 140), Windows wouldn't even start.  I'm talking the EXACT same CPU and EXACT same slot adapter.  It ran fine at 733 though.  Still; it's disappointing that the board can't even do what many people buy it to do.  There were more FSB settings than the Tyan though; but does it really matter? There were no settings between 133 and 140.

Also, with Abit's Softmenu, you get the ability to set the voltage in the BIOS.  This is a pretty big plus, as with most Apollo boards, you have to resort to using a slot adapter to set the voltage (thus requiring jumpers).  You can change the voltage in 0.05 intervals, but no matter which voltage I tried (up to 1.80v) I could NOT get the damn CPU to run at a 140 FSB!

This is very discouraging, especially coming from an Abit board.  If their Apollo Pro 133a performs anything like this, prepare to be very disappointed.


I've come to love the Apollo Pro 133 BIOS'.  They have a lot of cool tweak features that will keep us hardware freaks happy for many hours.  On most Apollo Pro 133/133a boards, you will find such things as a lot of memory settings, AGP settings, CPU settings, etc, etc...

Entirely missing from the VA6 though, was the popular "CPU IOQ" setting.  Many Apollo based boards included this, and allowed you to set it at either 1 or 4, with the 4 setting giving you a great performance boost.  Judging by the benchmarks, though, it looks like the VA6 had a default of 4, so I'll let it slide this time.
