SYSmark 2001

SYSmark tests the performance of several Content Creation and Office Productivity applications, and gives a final score, along with individual category results.

Just 2 days ago, BapCO announced SYSmark 2002, but unfortunately I was unable to attain a copy in time for this review.  Next time, folks!

SYSmark is probably the single most important real-world benchmark you will look at when comparing motherboards and CPU's among each other.  For full details on the apps used, read on...

SYSmark 2001 Office Productivity

The Office Productivity half of SYSmark tests PC performance in today's (Okay, maybe yesterday's) Office applications, and gives a final theoretical number based on performance.  I am sure most of our readers will have one or more of these apps installed on their computers:

-MS Word 2000
-MS Excel 2000
-MS PowerPoint 2000
-MS Access 2000
-MS Outlook 2000
-Dragon NaturallySpeaking Preferred v.5
-Netscape Communicator 6.0
-WinZip 8.0
-McAfee VirusScan 5.13

The trend continues! The AV45GT/R performs like a champ!

SYSmark 2001 Internet Content Creation

SYSmark tests Internet Content Creation in the following apps:

-Macromedia Dreamweaver 4
-Adobe Photoshop 6.0
-Adobe Premiere 6.0
-MS Windows Media Encoder 7
-Macromedia Flash 5

And again... Finally, we have the SYSmark Overall Score:

If you choose one real-world benchmark to look at when comparing PC's, make it this one (until people start using SYSmark 2002 anyway).  Judging by these numbers, it looks like the Shuttle AV45GT/R is the fastest of the bunch, over and over again!

Where is Winstone?

Normally we do ZD Winstone tests, but I find that to be rather redundant, since they use pretty much the same applications as SYSmark (in most cases older versions at that).  I also find Winstone to be quite flaky, often producing unrepeatable results.  Once Content Creation 2002 arrives, I think I'll give it another go, so watch for that in our next review..
