Quad-core CPU’s too much for you? AMD will have the solution

Triple core CPU’s.

Yup, not four cores, not two cores - three cores. AMD has announced that they’ll be adding triple-core processors to their Phenom processor for Q1 next year.

AMD’s reasoning for this is that quad-core processors only make up about 2% of the desktop market this year. I guess they assume that people who didn’t buy a four-core CPU might consider a three-core instead… Why they would think this, I have no clue. Unless they are considerably cheaper than Intel’s quad-core models, they will probably sell at exactly the same rate.

According to the PR, these new 3-core Phenoms will outperform “…similar quad-core AMD processors in certain gaming and digital content creation scenarios”. I guess we’ll have to wait and find out; either AMD knows something we don’t, or they are living in la-la-land.

3-core to outrun quad-core? They should put it better, because it sounds like some bad advertising for AMD’s quad-core processors.

It is, what they are effectively saying with this release is that because of manufacturing issues they cannot manufacturer perfect quad core chips at high frequencies. However, they CAN disable one core to allow it to run at high frequencies and then sell us these partially disabled chips.

I’m surprised AMD can buy silicon to produce chips, let alone companies at this point
