There are plenty of serious games coming out in the next month or so and even more awesomeness being released by the end of this year. I eagerly await Bioshock and it won’t be long before Crysis is available (so everyone will have an excuse to buy a DX10 video card). But what can we look forward to for 2008? There is, of course, GTA:IV and maybe if they get it done in time, Spore but earlier this month, we saw a little preview of something called Prototype.
It’s in this month’s issue of Game Informer, which has the exclusive scoop on the game. It’s damned impossible to find actual pictures or screenshots anywhere other than in that magazine. Details are sketchy right now but you play a dude in a hoodie named Alex that wakes up after a generic…I mean…genetic experiment that left him with weird powers, which include superhuman strength, speed and such. You can also absorb people and take their abilities and identities. I’m not sure what the deal with the story is but it’s a fight between mutants and humans. To make things worse, there’s a virus spreading throughout the city that kills humans.
The plot sounds generic but the gameplay and screenshots look awesome. It’s a “sandbox” type game that lets you roam free, ripping people in half, jumping on helicopters and scaling buildings. Think of it as something like Crackdown but with more, uh…Crack than down.
Everything is being kept relatively quiet other than the spread in Game Informer. Heck, I wouldn’t have even known if my buddy that works at Radical Entertainment, the developer for Prototype, didn’t tell me about it. The game is slated for a late (probably Q4) 2008 release on the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
