FINALLY! As good as the Playstation 3’s multimedia capabilities are, it’s mostly a waste of time if they don’t support the format used by 99.9% of people who record and watch video - DivX

DivX announced today that a future firmware update will add full DivX certification to the Playstation 3. This is a MAJOR coup for Sony; both consoles have good multimedia capabilities (PS3’s is superior in most ways) but really, how many people have media in the formats supported by them? As good as MP4-AVC is, and WMV, most people attain their media in the Xvid/DivX formats. Transcoding was a solution, but not a very good one as image quality is always lost in real-time transcoding, and pre-formating video files takes a long time. Until support of DivX was added, the media capabilities of both systems were pretty much wasted.

Now the Playstation 3 receives another reason to be considered for purchase (we’re still waiting on some good exclusive games though).
