I think a lot of people would agree that the most pleasant surprize in gaming this year is Portal, the most underhyped portion of The Orange Box. Portal was actually the part we were looking forward to most, but little did we know that a simple puzzle game would be so immersive and contain the best dialog ever heard in a video game.

But once you are finished with Portal, have witnessed the awesome ending, and played through the advanced maps and time trials, what are you to do next? What do all PC gamers do when they play through a game? Have fun hacking and tweaking it!

The folks at Primotech have written up the first easy-to-follow guide on how to access the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device in other Source-engine games. You might be surprized how easy it is to get this innovative tool to work in the full version of Half Life 2.

Using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device in Half Life 2

Of course, using the Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device in Half Life 2 makes the game very easy, and will break the level design in many instances. But hey, part of the fun in PC gaming is playing around with the games, and pushing them beyond how they were ever intended to be played.

I’m sure the map makers are working on combining the Portal Gun with more action oriented Half Life 2 gameplay as we speak. I can’t wait!
