Nintendo spends $17 million to uglify the world’s Wii Remotes

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that they intend to offer free Wii Remote covers to everyone who owns a Wii, and will be bundling them with future consoles. Their reasoning is that, I guess, people are still unable to keep a grip on the things. Actually I can attest to this; at a party this summer, some friends and I decided to play some Drunken Wii Bowling. Remotes were dropped, but luckily not flung into the TV screen. However, the dropped Remotes now feature a few battle-scars.

This is all a good gesture by Nintendo, but seriously, look at the damn things:

Nintendo’s free Wii Grip is UGLY

It makes the Wii Remote look like… well you know. Kids who have to wear s helmet every day.

There are much slicker sleeves for the Wii, most import gamers have been buying them for about $10-15. I am particular to the Project Design set, which allows you to change the batteries easily, without having to remove the sleeve.

But again, that’s $10, and this is FREE.

To get your free ugly sleeve, go to Nintendo.com and enter your serial #. You can get up to four, and they will start shipping on October 15.

I guess they wanted to keep it inside their branding boundaries. You know, white color, simple design and all…but it looks kinda 80’s. Not my cup of tea.
