Microsoft has released information on the update that will go live on December 4. But rather than coming from Redmond, it’s coming LIVE~! from JAPAN, where approximately 10 people own the console.
Anyway, the most significant update seems to be that the downloadable games area and marketplace will (finally) be a bit organized. Games are listed vertically, like always, but now you can scroll left and right to view different categories - similar to XMB. The name (in Japan, at least) of this area will be changed from “XBOX Live Arcade” to “Game Library”.
You will also get to write a full “personal profile” about yourself, rather than a short blurb. Now the annoying XBOX Live users will have more room than ever to “be funny”. Imagine the racial slurs and profanity that will ensue! This will go well with the new “friends of friends” social networking feature that will also be added to the update. This allows you to not only view the profiles of friends, but their friends as well.
Finally, text-chat will be added, for those who use that nifty keyboard-controller addon.
This is shaping up to be a not-so-big quarterly update for the 360. However, this is just a few details from Japan; the US market could very well receive even more features. We’ll find out in one week!
