I’m not sure Microsoft realizes this but Vista was just released…um…this year because I’m sure if they did, they wouldn’t be telling us they’d be releasing a new operating system in three years. From what I’ve gathered in the last few days, the new OS is codenamed “7″ (changed from “Vienna”) is apparently in development and slated for a release in 2010. So seriously, Microsoft, you’re telling me that by the time the Olympics are in Vancouver, we’re going to have a new OS on our hands. Seriously. With all the issues right now with Vista, you’re going to come out with an entirely new operating system in three years? This after saying there’s no serious timeframe for Vista SP1?
This deviates a little bit from the usual Microsoft plan as they seem to release new OSes about every six years since Windows 3.0. We don’t have many details on what it will entail exactly in terms of new technology or features but Cnet had this little snippet of info for us.
Like Vista, Windows 7 will ship in consumer and business versions, and in 32-bit and 64-bit versions. The company also confirmed that it is considering a subscription model to complement Windows, but did not provide specifics or a time frame.
