January is a rough month for video game sales. After seeing numbers steadily increase for the final 3 months of each year, January’s results look extra low in comparison. This is especially the case when manufacturers nearly sell out their entire inventory of product, which is what happened to both Nintendo and Microsoft. Therefore, the Playstation 3 enjoyed an artificially high ranking in sales last month:
January 2008 Hardware Sales
1) Nintendo Wii | 274,000
2) Playstation 3 | 269,000
3) Nintendo DS | 251,000
5) PlayStation Portable | 230,000
5) XBOX 360 | 230,000
That’s right - the PS3 outsold the XBOX 360! Woo-hoo? Not really. The 360 is suffering some major shortage issues, and potential buyers are unable to find them in stores. It hasn’t sold such a low amount of volume in months - the lowest number we have on record was last June, where it moved about 200K consoles. However, things aren’t all bad for the Playstation 3! For instance, that very June of 2007, Sony didn’t even manage to sell 100,000 consoles. In fact, this was their biggest month ever, December and November notwithstanding. Their next best record was October, where they sold 121,000 units.
So has Sony finally found the secret to success? All they need to do is firebomb Microsoft and Nintendo’s manufacturing plants, and they’ll be sure to outsell them each month! ;)
Okay, low-blow. Everyone knows how I hate the PS3, so moving on…

- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) | 239,600

December 2007 Software Sales
- Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) | 1,470,000
- Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) | 1,400,000
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PlayStation 2) | 1,250,000
- Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) | 1,080,000
- Assassin’s Creed (Xbox 360) | 893,700
- Halo 3 (Xbox 360) | 742,700
- Brain Age 2 (Nintendo DS) | 659,500
- Madden NFL 08 (PlayStation 2) | 655,200
- Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360) | 624,600
- Mario and Sonic: Olympic Games (Wii) | 613,000
Isn’t it strange to see games fall right off the map month to month? Guitar Hero III for Playstation 2 sold over a million copies in December, but the next month they didn’t even make the top 10, which only would have required 133,000. On the other hand, plenty of people were buying the same game for Wii and XBOX 360. Assassin’s Creed also disappeared, along with Brain Age. The appear to have been replaced by Burnout Paradise and Mario Party DS.

Then again, some might say the stores are out of 360’s because people keep swapping them with broken ones.
But hey, it’s not secret I hate the 360.

Next year I’ll buy one, this year it’s still garbage hardware.
sony wud have sold more units.one mistake with sony is that they should have brought out 2 versions of the ps3.one with blueray and one without blueray.its as if sony is forcing everyone to own a blueray player of which most people buying the ps3 are buying it because of its game playing functions and not blueray playing functions.NUFF SAID!!!!!!!!
It’s called marketing, eh?
That means that yes, BluRay won because people who bought PS3’s, ended up with a BluRay player.
What support did HD-DVD have?
Laptops from Toshiba?
Besides, while 360 games arrive on multiple DVD disc, my BluRay games do not.
Hell, the HD-DVD player attachment couldn’t even be used to play games. What kind of useless attachment is that?
It is the single most useless attachment the 360 had to it’s brand.
If your drive fried, it would make sense that this HD-DVD drive could be an upgrade, and some would use it as a disposable replacement drive.
Microsoft made sure you don’t have THAT option though.
Your argument would have some merrit, but it doesn’t seem like you have a strong grasp of the english language in text form.
Enough said.
Violator, you’re an ass. Why n the Hell would sony come out with a ps3 that had no blu ray? And for that matter, isn’t microsoft forcing you to buy that clunky ass HD DVD (man i hate typing that) player if you wanna watch DVDs in the high def format? Get with the times moron and face it: home video is evolving. Blu-Ray is where its going, so inherently you’re gonna have no choice when it comes to about the year 2009 or 2010 when DVDs are phased out and you wanna watch that great Indiana Jones and the Temple of The Crystal Skull, or the new Mummy that came out on (big surprise) Blu-Ray. I know what you’re gonna say: Dreamworks and steven Spielberg’s movies are only on HD DVD (dammit!). But didnt HD DVD (damn it all) just crumble? Eventually you’re gonna wake up and realize your opinion was meaningless.
and uhh violator…u no that the games the ps3 plays are blu ray discs right? wat an fcuking diikhead
but seriously…..ps3 does need to step it up when it comes to gameing…thats the main reason to buy it……get more (better) exclusives dammit!!
