We’re still at least half a year away from the launch of Intel’s 22nm Ivy Bridge, but samples are (allegedly) starting to leak out to the expected places. Somehow, Taiwanese overclocking site Coolaler (allegedly) got their hands on one, and have published some (alleged) benchmark results.
The CPU they (allegedly) have is clocked at just 1.8 GHz (this is a very early sample, after all), and comes with two physical cores supporting four threads via HyperThreading. There is 256 KB of L2 cache for each core, and 4 MB of L3 shared between them. For benchmarking, they downclocked a Core i5 2400 down to 1.8 GHz. I would have preferred they use a dual core i3 for a closer comparison. Ivy Bridge, despite it being a “TICK” chip (not a lot of architecutre or speed changes in Intel’s product development cycle) performed quite well against the quad core. It was within 2 seconds on the SuperPi test (22.2 – 20.8). Its 1.81 score in CineBench puts it around the same level of performance as the 2.8 GHz Clarkdale Pentium G6950, or a Phenom II X2 565, so the performance-per-watts ratio will be very favourable.
