Default x-fi loud hiss

i turned on my computer today and my headphones started hissing like MAD, it was like an untuned radio coming out of only the left channel. and it was LOUD. plugged my amp in instead and it was still going, so i tried restarting and now it's working fine

imminent death? i can't find much on the interpipes about this particular problem but i'm hoping it was just a one-off

yeah, i was going to give that a go if it happened again. doubtful that it's the problem as it's been running fine for about a year so far, but it's worth a try.

Dust your computer. Not even kidding. This is from my own experimentation and conclusions, but the X-Fi is very sensitive. In my own setup it respons similarly to an overdusted case, creating excessive heat and hence rendering artifacts. Overclocking my memory, especially certain timing settings - same thing.

Sound perfectly reasonable that over time if neglected, a powerful system runs hotter. Dust it, try downclocking and watch it work.

Perhaps Remove and re-install the drivers? I have had issues with creative products hissing because of driver issues.
