Well, here goes. Anyways, I made a dual-boot with Win98(first ed.)/XP. I had a few problems, but got past them, or so I thought. When the install was done, I double-clicked on the net, it didn't open. I updated my LAN drivers (since I've got cable net), and still no internet. I figured "what the hell, you got XP for net, you're set", and so it went. But after installing my Jane's F/A-18, I had no sound. I thought it was the game, but it wasn't. I checked under hardware, and there it was, it had no drivers. So off I went, back to XP, downloaded the sound drivers for 98. I installed them, and it worked. Then I disconnected a USB joystick I had connected originally. Then the true mayhem started. It no longer detected my cd-rom and my burners. It said I had problems with my IDE (it originally that, but the cd-roms were still listed) and my PCI. Anyways, tried the IDE drivers, but to no avail, because it detected the wrong chipset... Mind you, I was running an 845 chipset mobo, and that's what it asked for. So anyways, I booted 98 in safe mode, went to hardware profiles, and lo-and-behold, there were the cd-roms. Except one problem. The "disconnect" checkboxes were checked. So I unchecked them. Rebooted into normal, and they were gone again. Rebooted into safe-mode again, and the boxes were checked again. I am so frustrated, it's been 2 days, and I can't figure it out. Somebody please help, or I'm gonna re-format and make a dual-boot with Windows ME and XP. Oh, the agony!!!!

First off 98 & XP? Why don't you just choose XP.. XP Can Immulate both 95/98 your better off with just the one operating system, even if there are a couple of programs you only trust on 98

Alot of my old flight sims (which are like 80% of all my games) only like 98. My USAF's drop-down boxes don't work, so I can't change any options, or have multi-player games, or quick missions, or change weapon loadouts, or... you get the idea...
At least I can run that one. Alot of them won't even run, even with the compatibility trick! The ME disk is looking mighty tempting... ![]() <EDIT> Unless someone would be nice enough to let me "borrow" their 98SE disk... ![]() Come on people, do you REALLY want one of your friends to be running ME???

i use dos, win98se,win xp, and linux partitions (but i havent played with it much), and no problems.
kinda sound like you have conflicting os's. you have to install the oldest os first, then the second oldest and so on (exception linux, install last cuz m$ dont want you having it) if you installed xp first or on the same partition, you are hooped. to fix it ya gotta be a super geek. let us know what ya did and in the order you did it. formatting and starting over may not fix it, you have to remove nt's boot loader from the mbr first. well , what did ya do? you can install in mixed orders, but complexity increases. i can find m$ link on how to do it if ya want.
i would start over. use fdisk and delete all partitions. then create partions. exit fdisk on the c: prompt type fdisk /mbr start by installing 98se on the first partition, then install xp on the second partition. this way it is a no-brainer. Last edited by C_deck; 03-30-2003 at 03:17 PM. |

I got it «running»
... Well, actually, it's just running so I can play my flight sims... But I figured out the problem with the dc-roms. My GoBack software, that I had re-enabled, was mistaken by Windows 98 as orders from the motherboard to "block" the IDE signals. Well, I disabled, then re-installed (actually, it just added entries in the 98 registry), and the cd-roms are back online. But I STILL can't get on the net from 98. Gotta boot up in XP. It's a really annoying...
