Default Sil 3112a SATA Raid controller problems in XPpro

Hello, i seem to be having trouble with my raid controller/drivers....i put a new rig together using a ASUS A7N8X deluxe v2.0 MB, and im using the SATA controller with a Seagate 120gig sata HD....once the system was together, i did a fresh install of WinXP pro, used a floppy disk to load my raid controller drivers at start of install like it said...once the install was done, and windows booted....i started to install all nessary driver's that came with the MB CD....i noticed a yellow ! in my device manager for a RAID controller...so i installed the drivers that came with the CD, and when i went to reboot my pc it hangs and the logo screen with the blue thing going accross the screen very slowly....it never stops..i give up after 5 min or so..reboot the pc and choose the "last know good config" and XP will boot just fine...so i assume it is a driver problem?? i updated my MB bios to the uber ver1005, which also updated the bios on my controller( Sil 3112a Sataraid ) to ver4.2.12....i tried reinstalling the driver..same problem..i have gone online and tried 3 diff versions of drivers..all with the same results..xp hanges at the logo screen...i reboot with the last know good config....it boots up just fine and dandy....other than the yellow ! in the device manager..the pc runs like a champ....is this a problem i can just ignore?? im not runing a RAID config..i have just 1 sata HD installed?...its drivin me nuts trying to figuer out what is wrong....thanks for any help!!

also how can i tell what my HD is really transfering at? it shows it as a umda 6 in the SATA utility software that comes with the drivers on the asus cd...

use notepad and edit the file c:\boot.ini
change the line with
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect
to read
"Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /sos

when you reboot, make a note at the driver at which it hangs and post back here.

what does the driver in device manager say what the problem is. is the jumper on the mobo set to sata enable.

before that blue screen, xp loads drivers, so its not hanging on a driver. after that screen xp checks disk volumes. how did you install xp the second time? did you reformat the partition?

try this for now. boot using the xp cd and choose the recovery console. you will come to a black screen with a command prompt. enter these commands:

FIXBOOT <enter>
FIXMBR <enter>

reboot comp.

yes each time i reinstalled xp i deleted the partition..createad a new one and formated before installing XP.

i booted wiht the XP cd, went to the recovery console and did the fixboot, and fix mbr....rebooted..still hags and logo screen...so then i have to do the last good config thing...which is before i installed the sil 3122 drivers..and it boots right into XP no prblem...very weird

strange is right. i've only installed sata 3 times, all without a hitch.
in the device manager, right click on the yellow sata, select update driver, install from a specific location, click only the search from removable media checkbox (have the other checkbox unchecked) and click next.

did it look like it installed a driver from the cd?

i dont think the error reporting service will be loaded at that point. see if there is anything in there.
start/run and type "eventvwr.msc". in the action pulldown, "clear all events" for the three headings. reboot to the hang, then go back in the event viewer to see if anything has been reported.

you can boot with the f8 key and select bootlog.txt?? (or something like it) and on the next boot hang, then reboot to previous config and view the c:\bootlog.txt file using notepad. what is the last entry?

using the /sos option did point to a volume (hdd) problem. any utils that i know of will not load before the hang occurs. i'll check to see if i can find any preboot (free) tools.

are you using nvidia unified drivers from nvidia or the nvidia drivers from the mobo manufacturer (recommended) on gigabyte's web site for the mobo?

TailSpin and C_Deck, I too have the same problem. I've been working on it since the last weekend. There is an updated driver for this controller at Windows UpDate. This driver does the same thing...stalls at WinXP startup screen. I am running the nvidia unified drivers from Asus that came with the MB. I am running a single SATA (Maxtor) 120 G on the raid chip. Any help would be appreciated here.
Thanks

I booted using f8 then picked the bootlog.txt option.....it froze...i restated with the last good config, but i cant find a "bootlog.txt" file any where....i also cleard the event viewer....and when i rebooted from "the freeze" there are a few things listed but i have no clue which thing i should be looking at...however under application there is something about a "ATI smart" under the source tab saying it was started? and under system it said sumthin about a AIT hot key poller service has enterd the stop state( under source tab its listed as a service controll manger)?? could there be a conflict with by AIT 9600pro card?? i was curious how it would work in a nvidia board/chipset....no idead if that has anything to do with it tho..

update: i tried disabling both the ATI smart, and the ATI hot key poller in services...but it made no difference
