Default XBOX 360 vs PS3 (and Wii) Power Consumption Report

Today's video game console war is taking an interesting twist, as we fire up our trusty power meter to look at power consumption levels of the 3 newest video game consoles.

We tested power consumption during video game play, DVD playback, HD video, standby mode, and other console functions. We also added in a PC and a dedicated DVD player to make things interesting. The results may surprize you!

Check it out!

lol I'm not surprised by the Wiis power consumption but I would have thought maybe the ps3s would be a little lower in some areas..

cool. A guy posted similar results in the avsforum a couple months back. it's good to know they are accurate now. We all wondered if possibly future firmware updates might include power saving features, one can only hope.

The PS3 looks so lonely over on one side all by itself...

FWIW, NPD pre-limenary sales numbers for january just came out...
************

Wii leads the January hardware sales in the US. Apparently, it has sold 436,000 units throughout North America. Microsoft's Xbox 360 is in the middle with 294,000 units sold, while the PS3 isn't far behind with 244,000 units.

**************

When "the real" ps3 launch happens next month, and all the games get released, i guess we will finally see if the Ps3 has any chops or not, or if the price is really too high to stomach.

I'd like to see comparisons of the noise produced by each console while playing movies.

Wow the Wii is cheap in every way! That's next on my list. The xbox360 looks like a dell pc.

without a doubt, the ps3 wins there. The 360 is a rocket engine, and I've heard some people say the HDDVD add-on is just as loud as the 360.

The ps3 is near silent for most people. In my house, when the room gets too hot (which happens in the winter, building controls the heat) it will spin faster and make some noise, but not enough to piss you off.

Some of the coverage this is getting:

Digg (of course )
Engadget.com
Joystiq.com
C|Net Podcast (forward to 11:40 in the show)

I have another article planned that should be just as interesting
