Default Setting Network Access Permisions between XP Pro and Home

Hey guys, long time no see. Been really busy lately. Off to college now etc. Well I got a laptop for college to take notes on, and I need to network it to my home PC. My home PC is using XP Pro Corp. and the laptop is using XP Home. I did the network setup thing, and theyre both in the same workgroup, and both PCs see each other and have folders shared etc, but whenever I try and access one computer from the other it says I dont have permission to acceess network resource and to make sure I have permission to access it. How do I set permissions? Ive been trying to find this for forever now and its starting to make me feel like a noob again. Any help guys?

make sure the guest account is enabled on both machines. other than that i can't help you. get a cracked copy of winxp pro off the bittorrent and dump xp home seems to fix most problems.

Right click on the directory that you have shared and go to the permissions tab. Make sure you have allow users to write to files selected.

You're not using Corel are you? I had a weird permissions error over a shared network with some Corel files pre a service pack patch once.

Is the directory you're trying to share My Documents? : http://www.practicallynetworked.com/...ydocuments.htm

nope, no corel, no my docments, its a folder in a 2ndary drive, and the main shared folder on the main drive. It wont even let me into the PC to see whats shared, As soon as I click on the PC in "View Workgroup computer", or try and map a network drive etc, it give me that error.

Make sure File and Print Sharing is turned on under the Local Area Network Connection properties. If it's not in the list install it.

Is it a one-way problem or both ways? In other words, can you access the files on the laptop from the home PC but not the other way around?

I've found that sometimes in XP Pro you have to go a step further and specify a user on the other computer and give them permissions-- go to the Sharing property of the folder you want to share and use adduser to add your account from the other computer and give it the permissions you need.

Don't try and plug the name in yourself because you'll never get it right, use the search/show all function. I'm not on my home system at the moment so I can't give you a step-by-step right now.
