Default SATA probs

So I got to find out how much fun it is to use SATA on the A&N8X Deluxe tonight.

Here's what I got
(not overclocked for setup)
Asus A7N8Xv2 Deluxe using latest Asus driver 1.16 and 1007 BIOS
onboard Silicon Image SiI 3112 SATALink Controller
XP2500 Barton
512MB PC3200
9700 Pro
W.D. 80Gb IDE using SATA converter to SATA 1 on mobo
Maxtor 40Gb IDE using SATA converter to SATA 2 on mobo
WindowsXP Home SP1 - all updates installed
380 TruePower PSU

Here is the problem, I cannot get the controller to recognize both SATA drives, and I cannot get windows to detect the second SATA drive.

Here's what I have done
1. Made sure SATA/RAID jumper was enabled - good
2. Double checked connections and jumper settings on drives - good.
3. Removed IDE drives (optical drives) - controller now recognizes the W.D. in RAID setup config, but not the Maxtor. Windows boots W.D. is present (duh, it booted) but Maxtor not there
4. Through device driver, I updated the controller driver - reboot, controller still does not see Maxtor, Windows does not see it either.
5. Screamed
6. Went to see Return of the King
7. Came home and booted computer - screamed some more
8. Searched for other people's probs and fixes - no luck
9. Scrathing head and feeling dumb.
edit - boot device is set to SCSI

I will switch the converter on the drives to see if those have a problem as to why the controller isnt recognizing one of the drives, but I am still dumbfounded as to why I cannot use IDE devices with SATA even after using updated drivers.

Default Re: SATA probs

So what exactly are you asking?

<EDIT>

If I remember correctly, you can't use those converters with Maxtor HDs...
