Thought about building a new system
Cause I wanna play BF4 well, but then I got to piecing stuff together at Newegg and realized there's SO MUCH DIFFERENT SHIT out there nowadays, I'm completely lost. So I think I'm gonna give up.

Now I see why consoles are reigning supreme for gaming. I don't want castrated BF4 though.

I also just realized nobody will probably ever read this.

Re: Thought about building a new system
I read it :P

your best bet budget wise is to go with a core i5 gen 3 or 4 (not a huge performance difference imho) and get a 7870 or a 7950 (again not a huge bump in AMDs latest gen of cards, this way you can save some $$). Throw in 16 gb of ram (2x8) a 240 gb SSD and a 2 tb hdd and you should be good. A case of course, as per your budget and preference.

Believe it or not I read it too. I feel ya, hard to keep up with PC components. Seems like it's more spoilers and neons than transistors anymore too.

Re: Thought about building a new system
by the way, just got a ps4, with BF4. perfectly fine for me, I prefer consoles for shooters. I like PC for Civ 5 and strategy games.

Consoles for shooters? I can't stand not having a pointing device. I only prefer a gamepad for 3rd person or platforming.

What was confusing about building a new PC? It's actually very much the same as when we were in our golden years here. You gotta look up the websites, read the reviews, decide what you want etc. You're just used to knowing the current products, and forgot all the research that we would do all the time reading reviews.

A bit outdated now, but that should intro you to the newer hardware (most Radeon cards have new names now though)

Have to start working on a winter one.. if you guys have any feedback or requests on this type of article let me know!

Re: Thought about building a new system
Ok I basically just upgraded my current build thats a few years old now with the following:

1 x ($299.99) CLUB 3D royalKing CGAX-R928X7O Radeon R9 280X 3GB

1 x ($114.99) G.SKILL Ripjaws X Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 1866

1 x ($109.99) Intel 530 Series SSDSC2BW180A4K5 2.5" 180GB SATA III SSD

Everything is getting transferred to a 1 x ($59.99) LIAN LI PC-A05FNB Black Aluminum ATX Mid Tower...which is super nice and all aluminum for the price.

And I'll be looking at a 1 x ($149.99) ASUS VS248H-P Black 24" 2ms HDMI LED Backlight display instead of an old 720p 32" TV.

Also saved $235 or so scoring black friday deals.

Passed on a new CPU/motherboard setup as BF4 doesnt seem to care about older CPU's, benchmarks I saw showed maybe 5-10% difference at most between my quad core Phenom II and some of the latest i7's. Maybe next year I'll step that up and add another R9 280X in crossfire, but this should be fine for now.

Re: Thought about building a new system
Nice! What CPU do you have?

Winged Poop 12-06-2013 10:21 PM

Re: Thought about building a new system
Phenom II x4 965.

I just threw the new memory in with the 4 gigs of 1333 I already had. How much performance benefit do you think I would get pulling the old stuff out and just running the 16 gigs of 1866 instead of having 20 gigs at the slower speed?

Re: Thought about building a new system
While you won't get much by increasing the speed, it will definitely be more than having 4 extra GB on top of 16.

Plus with a slow CPU and bus, every little bit will help. I would consider overclocking the CPU if you're up for it.
