Hi,
I bought two Gigabyte 7VRXP motherboards and have tried everything I could to start them up,but I can't get them to POST. No beeping at all. Screen doesn't come out of sleep mode. Only the fans spin up, along with the HDD. The CD-ROM's LEDs liight up and I can open the trays. The floppy drives' light stays lit continuously. I'm hoping it's something really stupid that I am overlooking. I have installed only the video cards, memory, HDD, and CD-Roms (along with CPUs and HSFs). Actually, I once got one to boot and could go into CMOS BIOS setup, but since it was not my primary system, I wanted to put my primary components in, so I swapped in my CPU, HDD, CDROM, and video card. Then I couldn't get it to POST. Stupid me!!! one has a 2000+, the other has a 2100+. One has a leadtek Geforce4 4600, the other has a PNY Geforce4 4400. Both have 431 watt power supplies. Both have 512MB Corsair DDR3000 CAS 2 memory. One has a Pioneer DVD-burner, the other a Yamaha CD-RW Both have a Silverado HSF Both have a Teac floppy drive Both have WD Caviar drives (not like this makes a difference if I can't even POST?!?) Have been switching machines to and from MS Office keyboard (USB) and intellimouse explorer (also USB). And of course, both have more hardware, but not installed yet. FSB set at 133. Computer turns on, fans run, no beep, Power light turns o n, HDD light sometimes turns on. Can feel HDD in one system spin up. Floppy drive light stays lit. Again, cannot get into BIOS setup, Monitor does not enter from sleep mode. Tried booting from FSB 100 and still didn't work. The setup that worked once (before stupid me swapped out the parts) was the 2000+, Yamaha CD-RW, PNY Geforce4. Does it make a difference whether the machine will POST or not if the HDD or CD-RW drives are installed? Technically, I shouldn't need to connect the HDD or CD-ROM to get them to post, should I? I really want to try Morrowind with my new Leadtek card! can you understand how frustrating this can be!?! I feel dumb asking this question, but is DDR3000 cas 2 memory too fast for this board? I am going to try some PC2700 memory. Any suggestions to get these machines to POST? seems more like user error than faulty MBs?/ what are the chances that I am sent two faulty motherboards? Per someone's suggestion, I have tried running the boards on foam, with only the front panel connectors and power supply connected to see if they beep. They did not beep, so it was suggested that I have two bad motherboards!!! I have already RMA'd another board, an Abit board. I had been able to boot into windows, but even after updating the Bios it would hang in Bios setup!!! can you see any trends that I can't? Shoot, at least it was able to boot! went from bad to worse. Thanks for any help!! |

Check floppy drive interface cable. The solidly lit LED is an indicator that it's on backwards. While you're inside the case, reseat the ram.
edit: Try posting with nothing extra installed. CPU, RAM, Vid card only. Last edited by Occasus; 05-16-2002 at 04:23 PM. |

Thanks Occasus,
I have tried posting with only video card cpu and ram (no HDD or CDROM) and no dice. Thanks for the heads up on the floppy drive; there was no indication as to which way to orient the cable. |

the memory can be faster than the mobo, the mobo can't be faster than the ram. so, thats not the problem.
check to make sure your CMOS battery jumper is set to ON. the fans and HD will power up with it off, but the comp won't boot, just like your problem. find your manual it should have CMOS jumper somewhere. |

My motherboard did not come with a CMOS jumper, though it does have the CMOS pins where you could put a jumper. From what I've read from other owners of this board, it doesn't seem to come with them.

Some Mobo's will not POST if you have the fan header in the wrong slot. Make sure your CPU fan is plugged into header 1.
If that fails to solve your problem, the next issue is seeing whether your Power Supply is rated for AMD, remember more power doesn't mean compatibility. If THAT fails, then you look at your RAM, then your CPU. Generally if your computer doesn't post it's your RAM or Processor. You are running with thermal paste right? Can you try underclocking your FSB and see if it boots? |

check all your cable connections, make sure everything is plugged in the corect way and in the right plug, dont know if that board has agp pro but if it does make sure the plastic tabs are still in place and the vid card is in place, have heard of probs with it
also, if its happening on both boards i would seem to think that it is something simple like a dipswitch somewhere, unplug everything and go through your mobo manual page by page, checking everything, then plug them back in and most importanly, givt the puter love, it sounds corny but it works, so many times has that revived my anchient computer from a nearly fatal ddisaster
