Hello!
This morning i attempted to change the fan of my PSU. To have more space, I removed the heatsink/fan from the CPU, but it was stuck to the CPU with the thermal compound, so I end up pulling out the CPU stuck to the heatsink. The CPU did not seem to have suffer any visible damage. I put back everything togheter after removing the dust of the components, and all i got are the PSU and CPU fan running, but no post, no beep. So I went out and buy a new PSU (same Amp, more watt) still the same. Tried a 3rd PSU that was laying around, still no beep. Upon powering on, the usb mouse light up, the HDD starts, the fans turns, but nothing show on the monitor, and no difference if i plug it on the onboard or PCI-e card. I unplugged everything untill all i have is a motherboard connected to a PSU and still no beep or post. I changed the CMOS battery and did a hard reset with the jumpers on it, to no change. I am pretty sure its not the PSU. And if it was the CPU, I think i would have gotten a beep or something. I dont think its the ram, as i have 4 sticks of ram, and I tried all the combinasions of stick and slot possible. I did reseated the CPU many time. The mobo is a m2a-vm, and it had given me a hard time when i tried to install windows 7 and i had to update the bios, but it had been working fine for a few months now. Any suggestion? |

No beeps = CPU or mobo is dead. Most likely the CPU. Depending on what sort of chip it is the chip coming up with the heatsink might have been enough to kill it entirely.
For future reference if you are going to be working on your PSU you should remove it from the case entirely first.

this could be something simple like a ground. my mobo was grounding out on my case and it made this exact problem happen to me. make sure your screws are not loose (don't over tighten either! you will crack the board!)
i remember another time where this happened was because of a fan issue. take your CPU back out and check to make sure the pins are all in good condition and inspect the mobo thoroughly. when you put it back in make sure they all align and it's as far in the slot as it can go before locking it into place. make sure the compound is still there or replace it with some extra (it never hurts). remove everything from the system except your RAM, vid card, and PSU and attempt to boot the system. if it was the RAM it would beep. the video, the comp might not/would not turn on. definitely off w/ the PSU problems.... you might want to take a real good look at your board for physical damage (burns, bloated capacitors). how does your CPU come out while pulling off a heatsink unless your CPU lock was disengaged? and why would you change a fan in your psu? i have to explain some technics of this... if your mobo is a few years old, if it's on regularly there is an inevitable heat issue that takes place that slowly warps boards over years. by pulling on the cpu in the way that you did, you could have severed/cracked the connections connecting to the CPU slot. the CPU/mobo may or may not be working anymore. if there's a severed connection on the mobo when u try to power it, when that signal hits the CPU it could dmg it, frying it. otherwise the connection was completely broken and the CPU may still be good. consider testing it @ a comp tech store, try your own voltage meter if you'd like. you might want to take a look @ another mobo/CPU pack from newegg. the mobo is probably shot though. the boot up MAY have killed the CPU ![]() be delicate man |
