i've got a MSI KT3 Ultra2 with a 1800 AMD Athalon XP chip. When I power up, I get a beep beep ... beep and then a half a minute goes by and it powers down. I've tried 3 different video cards and 2 different sticks of RAM (in different slots). I've just built this and can't find any documentation on the beeps codes. Does anyone know where I can find about the beep codes or know them off hand??
Thanks |

We need to know what BIOS you're running. Award? Do you have a fan connected to the CPU fan header on the mobo? Last edited by Rbreb13; 10-19-2003 at 08:30 AM. |

Are you positive it's plugged into a CPU fan header (named CPUfan on the mobo), not a case fan header (often called SYSfan on the mobo)? Are you properly installing your ram and your video card? Heatsink properly seated?

Its plugged into CFAN1 on the mobo. I reseated my RAM, video card and ripped out my old HD and and put in a new one. Now I only get one beep, it stays on for a few then powers down. I can get into my BIOS, but only for a minute or two. The link that Rbreb13 supplied says that 1 short beep is a DRAM refresh failure. What does that mean?

Sounds like the overheat protection is kicking in. Check and make sure your HSF is seated properly, might be 180 degrees off. The ledge on the HSF lines up with the Logo on the socket.

I reseated my heat-sink but still get the same (one) beep. In my BIOS the system temp maxes around 54C/130F. I have MSDOS on my primary and it even boots into a DOS prompt, I can type commands and everything view their output but it still powers down after a about minute.
My boards manual says it uses PC2700, PC2100 and PC1600 DDR. I have two 512 sticks of PC2100 DDR. I can boot into a DOS prompt so I guess we can safely say that its not the RAM. Thanks all for the help. Any more suggestions? |

I had an MSI that done this, eventually i found out that the rubber feet that support the MB was the culprit, so i took them out and never had any more problems
Also have you tried taking a stick of memory out just in case? Are all Jumpers set on the MB? Last edited by markc; 10-19-2003 at 10:51 AM. |

i am sure MSI's say on screen that your CPU is too hot and it needs to shut down. Mine does anyway!
