Default IDE vs. SATA

Hi!

My question does not concern the speed difference between IDE and SATA, but rather the time span in which all HDs will be SATA. I need a new HD and my current 1,5 year old MB (Soyo KT333 Dragon Ultra) only supports IDE. I'd like to buy a HD that I can also use in my next comp (when I update maybe 1,5 - 2 years from now). So how fast is IDE disappearing from the market? Or is there a way to use a SATA HD in my current comp? Or should I just buy a IDE HD, because IDEs will be around for at least 5 years or something....

Thanks in advance.

Buy SATA, that is where all HDs are headed in the next couple of years.

IDE will be around for a long time yet. Theres a lot of servers and such that won't be replaced for years.

Thanks for the fast replies.

I thought so too. But will regular home computer MBs (although I'm not really sure how different server MBs are) also support IDE in the future?

The problem is my MB which doesn't support SATA. Are there any converters for that? And if so, do they work?

Don't waste your cash. Stick to IDE.

Yeah, I don't think IDE is going anywhere in the near future. Mobo manufacturers will continue to make boards that are IDE compatible. But I think the majority of high end boards are going to start going SATA. This is my view. I would wait to see what Rbreb has to say though, as he is more knowledgeable than me about these things.

get the SATA, there are converters for SATA - IDE, and the price diffrence is often like $5

But you lose performance with those converters. And they AREN'T 5 bux, not on my last check.

Even if the difference in price between the 2 is $30 isn't it still worth it ?

A little difference in price doesn't matter that much in my decision. And a little difference in speed (133 vs.150) doesn't matter much either. But I guess the converters cost too, so will the difference in price be that little in the end? But a bigger concern for me is the functionality of the SATA HD when used with a converter. I understand that the converter will limit the speed until I get a suitable MB, but will it somehow affect my system negatively? (Or will it fit in the first place?) And are the converters trouble free?

I'm planning on using the new HD for about 4-5 years, after that it's only SATA anyway i guess. I just don't want to make a bad investment and find out in a year or two when updating my rig that my still sparkling-new IDE is "the HD of the past".
