Default Basic PC troubleshooting

***Moderators. Please edit the list instead of posting new replies so that the guide stays organized.

General
  • Always remember when you are puzzled by which components are bad, keep it simple. Remove all non-essential boards, remove all sticks or RAM except for one, and start adding parts until the problems happens again.
  • If the problem happens while no non-essential parts are in your system, replace your parts until the problem goes away.

Processor
  • remember that if you are using thermal grease between the heatsink fan and the processor, use the right amount. Too much or too little can result in poor...results. We recommend Arctic Silver 3. Check their website for proper use proceedures.

Motherboard
  • System Beeps when Starting: Look up error code on motherboard vendor site

Hard Drive
  • clicks when system starts: Bad Hard Drive, try tapping when booting to boot and if it boots, quickly back up your data before complete HD failure.

Video Card
  • Always seat your card securely and if you have a clip or a clasp on the AGP slot, make sure it's closed. If your card does not post, reseat the video card first.
