Default Please help my slow AMD FX-55

I need some suggestions.

I'm running the following.
AMD FX-55 overclocked to 2860 MHz
1 Gig Dual Channel OCZ PC4200
NVidia FX5200 (old card from previous system) 128Mg

My problem is that when I attempt to watch videos using Windows Media Player 10 (or any other player for that instance) it uses up 100% of my CPU.

Not all videos will do this, and if I reboot, sometimes they will play without freezing (they usually freeze momentarily when the above happens).

I've asked around and I can't get to the bottom of this. Some people suggested that my video card may not be up to the task, but I've used this same video card (in 4x instead of 8x) in my old system without any issues.

Please help as this is really annoying. There's got to be a setting or something that I'm overlooking.

Heat issue? Do the FX's also throttle down?

Heat is not an issue. My temp is ~42 celcius. That should not be a problem.

Basically, whenever I do anything else (even CAD design and stuff like that), I've never seen the CPU usage maxxed out for so long.

I will try to update as many drivers as I can.

Not sure if its the only problem but your vid card is definitely a bottle neck on that setup.

I realize that it's a bottle neck when looking at overall performance. However, it should be able to play a measly video (especially since it used to do it on my old AMD XP 1800 sytem.

This is going to sound obvious but are you running the newest nvidia drivers?

I would think the videocard can't handle all the video processing and makes the CPU do it.

Ok, try playing video with a non-directmedia player like VLC http://www.videolan.org. If video plays with this player it means the problem is with DirectMedia acceleration, If not then we can rule that out. You can also try installing older drivers such as the ones that shipped with your card or ones from the driver archive at Guru3d.com
