The North American December sales figures are in and, well, it was a big month. Game companies saw a total revenue of $4.82 billion come their way last month, nicely capping off a $17.9 billion year. This marks the biggest year ever for the games industry - a 43% increase in sales over 2006’s $12.5 billion year.

Christmas 2007 will be fondly remembered by many who received a video game console. Each console managed to find their way into at least 1 million North American homes, with the exception of the PS3. Here’s how the sales stacked up last month, as well as November 2007, which we didn’t report on for some reason.

December 2007 Hardware Sales

1) Nintendo DS | 2,470,000 (61% increase over November)
2) Wii | 1,350,000 (37% increase over November)
3) Xbox 360 | 1,260,000 (64% increase over November)
4) PlayStation 2 | 1,100,000 (121% increase over November)
5) PlayStation Portable | 1,060,000 (87% increase over November)
6) PlayStation 3 | 796,600 (71% increase over November)

November 2007 Hardware Sales

1) Nintendo DS | 1,530,000
2) Wii | 981,000
3) Xbox 360 | 770,000
4) PlayStation Portable | 567,000
5) PlayStation 2 | 496,000
6) PlayStation 3 | 466,000

Everyone saw a signifiant increase in sales, especially the PS2 which more than doubled its November total. Nintendo’s inability to keep up with demand for the Wii caused it to have the smallest increase in ratio over November.

Looking at these figures, it’s clear to see that had Nintendo been able to provide stores with more Wii consoles, they would have sold well over 2 million. It also looks like those who weren’t able to buy a Wii this Christmas chose the Playstation 2 as an alternative, or perhaps picked up a DS Lite instead.

On the software side, things pretty much stayed the same. The top selling games didn’t increase by much, but more games were sold overall, compared to Noember. Almost everyone who picked up a Wii bought Wii Play as well… Well, they bought a Wii Remote that happened to come with a dreadful game.

December 2007 Software Sales

1) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) | 1,470,000
2) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) | 1,400,000
3) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PlayStation 2) | 1,250,000
4) Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) | 1,080,000
5) Assassin’s Creed (Xbox 360) | 893,700
6) Halo 3 (Xbox 360) | 742,700
7) Brain Age 2 (Nintendo DS) | 659,500
8) Madden NFL 08 (PlayStation 2) | 655,200
9) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Xbox 360) | 624,600
10) Mario and Sonic: Olympic Games (Wii) | 613,000

November 2007 Software Sales

1) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (Xbox 360) | 1,570,000
2) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii) | 1,120,000
3) Assassin’s Creed (Xbox 360) | 980,000
4) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (PlayStation 2) | 967,000
5) Wii Play w/ Remote (Wii) | 564,000
6) Mass Effect (Xbox 360) | 473,000
7) Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare (PlayStation 3) | 444,000
8) Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock (Wii) | 426,000
9) Halo 3 (Xbox 360) | 387,000

I have both Xbox and Ps3. I got my Xbox on my birthday in november and thought i would never get sick of it and spending the 5er a month for Xbox live didnt seem so bad… But on christmas day my mum (seperated/divorced) bought me a PS3 i had a bit of think about it and before i set it up even thought about selling it and buying another Xbox 360. I first set it up and it took me awhile i admit to get the internet and playstation network up and running but i did. I knew a few people with both and most the people who had an Xbox didnt have Xbox live so i usually waited online for random people to come on they didnt… The ps3 however was easy to talk, play, make friends. After awhile of both i started to realise that loading time and bad connections with the Xbox because it isnt a private network slowed all the online games down on games like Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare i noticed that people would “jump” around as the connections were being broken by people using the computer internet aswell as the Xbox this annoyed me and lots of others so all-in-all i have been looking for anyone who wants a Xbox 360 cos i want another Ps3 lol they are suberbly better and i hope this has convinced u 2 buy the ps3 …. Thanks for reading.
