Drobo Storage Robot

I find it a little creepy that this guy is talking about the thing like it’s a person but damn this thing is cool. It’s called the Drobo Storage Robot and while it doesn’t move or talk like Johnny Five, it is a very intelligent and, as you can see from the video, almost completely moron-proof storage system. Drobo is an external USB 2.0 enclosure for up to four hot-swappable SATA drives in a sort of RAID configuration. You can add and remove drives at any time and they don’t even have to be matching drives. You can basically use any SATA hard drives lying around.

I’m actually confused as to how the heck this thing works (and so quickly) since you can remove drives and not lose any data as long as the total data doesn’t exceed the total hard drive space. It all seems a bit too good to be true but hey, it looks like it works, is simple to use and looks very sleek and stylish. However, at $499, the price is a bit steep…probably about 20 times more than a regular hard drive enclosure but hey, if it actually works as advertised, it might be useful in corporate environments or for people that do video editing and such.
