Microsoft is ramping up the hype train for the upcoming announcement of DirectX 12 at GDC on March 20th. They have set up an official twitter account, which made this tease of a tweet earlier today:
— DirectX 12 (@DirectX12) March 7, 2014
Actually if you missed it, the official DirectX 12 announcement page has an Xbox One logo alongside the Windows 8 logo, so it looks like the Xbox One will have DirectX 12 capabilities. As for how much, or what any of it means, we can’t say for sure yet. At the very least, it looks like Microsoft is taking the threat of OpenCL (particularly on SteamOS) and Mantle quite seriously.
In the end, competition like this usually only means good things for the end user, so I am eagerly anticipating the March 20 announcement.
