As we had mentioned previously, DirectX will be receiving “Mantle-like” close-to-hardware API capabilities, which will be discussed at GDC 2014. What we didn’t know at the time was that this will be announced under a brand new revision of DX – DirectX 12. They have even started an official twitter account, with a great first tweet:
— DirectX 12 (@DirectX12) March 5, 2014
This refers to rumors last year, citing AMD sources, that there will “never be another version of DirectX… ever”
You can read more about the impending announcement here, on the MSDN blog. The usual hardware companies will be involved – Intel, AMD, and Nvidia. An interesting addition though, is Qualcomm, makers of the ARM based Snapdragon SoC. So it looks like DirectX 12 will have some ARM based functionality, which means better support for mobile platforms.
Watch for news coming from GDC on March 20.
