Dell’s Next Generation DisplayPort LCDs

Like a lot of folks, I’m a big fan of Dell’s LCDs. They’re reasonably priced, stylishly designed and great all-around performers. I still use a Dell FPW2005 as a second display on my box and it’s performed well since I got it years ago.

A picture of a new Dell LCD surfaced recently and I must say, it is a thing of beauty. I mean, look at that clear bezel and touch-sensitive controls. That’s very Porsche Design or Philippe Starck At only a half-inch thick, it is also much thinner than most LCDs that are currently on the market. It looks like it also has integrated speakers and apparently it also has a microphone.

The new LCD is also based on DisplayPort, which is a new display technology competing with HDMI for the next generation of displays. It can support some seriously high resolutions (up to 4x more than current HDTV standards) and monitors can be chained to each other rather than all being connected to the same source. This could mean a cleaner cable configuration for multiple monitors or even an increase in the number of pre-configured multi-monitor setups.

But either way, I’m mostly concerned with how absolutely gorgeous that would look on my desk.

Interesting and awesome.

Duh Bob. Your window won’t let you get anything done, unless all you need to get done is watch the clouds roll by or random people walking.

How is that transparent glass panel around the edge going to help you put two monitors side by side…
and please, no integrated speakers please

I like the idea of the transparent edges, I’m not a fan of the big chunky black edges to most current LCD displays, but why do they have to be so wide? also integrates speakers are absolutely useless, totally agree they are a waste of time. The only problem I see with that display is the gloss finish, that will cause a large amount of glare thus adding to eye strain, so not very ergonomic at all.

I tend to think this is a home made idea. Why would you stick highly reflective glass like that infront of an lcd screen?

I hope you can take the clear glass off it (it doesn’t look very good), and I dislike the stand. Daisy chaining the monitors seems like a great idea though, plus the super high resolutions, Cant wait.

Oh second thought, because of the touch sensitive controls, taking the clear bezel off probably wont be possible. Pressing a button and having something touch sensitive is exactly the same to me.

Yes, it does look very nice, and I actually like the integrated speakers.

As for using glass: a lot of high end LCD monitors use a glass front — AG Neovo and Apple Inc both cover their monitors in glass (actually museum-grade high density scratch proof crystal), and then apply a layer of optical blooming to the inside to correct the colour and thus improve the gamut.

Oh, and being glass means you don’t have a “gloss finish”, you get glass. Completely different, and not as reflective as those horrible “gloss finish” acrylic overlays that are appearing in Quanta’s laptops these days.

I’d sooner take an LCD monitor with a glass finish than a common, fuzzy, over-corrected, gamut-inaccurate, contrast-challenged soft acrylic covered LCD.

Grow up and use textas. Crayons are so old skool.

as for the monitor, very sexy. may not be that practical but very sexy.

Thanks for that informative opinion “i hate dell support sucks”! Very useful! /sarcasm

I personally think that although it looks very good, the integrated speakers will sounds rubbish, and the display will pick up fingerprints very very easily!

What’s the point of LCDs? If it was a monitor it would be like sitting in front of a window all day.

will… you’re “full of it” about “glare”. There effectively is none unless you bend over backwards to make it so. You know, like shine a spot light on it at such an angle that it reflects into your face.

Shiny, glossy, Bright Screens are superior every-which-way-from-Sunday vs. dull, lifeless, dirty-looking matte screens.

And BTW… the “eye strain” concept of Brite Screen is total myth!

Where did these morons get this LCD/Staring out of windows analogy from?

If I really wanted a chair made out of wood, I’d go sit on a log!

Hurrr!

I wonder if the integrated speakers are actually those NXT transducers which make the whole front panel into a flat panel speaker.
That would give pretty impressive sound and mean there are no need for grille holes for the sound to come out.

pretty cool, the only doubt I have about that is the reflexions on the screen, as you can see from the photo, there is alot of reflexions, and for some people, such as people with windows or lights behind them, the problem of not being able to see the screen will be even more of a problem.

otherwse it is pretty impressive

I was saying to some people a few months back (about when the iPhone was announced) that I expect Apple shall be introducing a touchscreen version of the iMac and their Cinema Displays before long using the same or similar technology. Now with Dell getting involved in this and the Microsoft Milan table I am beginning to believe the venerable old mouse shall soon be going the way of the floppy drive.

The mouse will never leave the desktop, as long as PC gaming is alive and well.

I would make a comment about the specs of this monitor, but there isn’t a single piece of quality information about it. What size(s) does it come in? What are the viewable inches? What is the contrast ratio? What’s the response rate? What kind of DVI/audio does it support other than HDMI? ANY??? It supposedly comes in very high resolutions, but what IS this high resolution? Since I happen to know what the highest one money can buy is, and it’s never been a Dell, then I doubt very much that this monitor is really as great as it sounds.

Also, yes, glass can be anti-glare, and there are some quality glass LCD monitors that don’t have obnoxious reflections, but anyone who says that this particular monitor doesn’t have glare is obviously an imbecile with vision problems. You can hardly see the wallpaper on the desktop because the glare from the ceiling lights is so bright.

Just like everything else Dell sells, it’s just pretty wrapping paper hiding the piece of shit underneath.

Very nice! I want one. Or, two or three! Any mention of a shipping date? Any window? Less than 18 months? More?
